New findings in prevention of deadly peanut allergy
According to the latest recommendations from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a way to reduce the risk of development of a life-threatening peanut allergy is to start introducing foods that contain peanuts as soon as babies can tolerate other solid foods. It is not advised to use whole peanuts as babies can choke on them but peanut butter or pureed food with nut power is advised. Such approach can help young organisms to get used to the product and do not develop the intolerance. The new guidelines refute the previous ones that said you should not give babies anything containing peanuts before the age of three.
Your diet defines whether you would suffer from dementia or not
It has been long thought that a Mediterranean Diet can be a good way to keep your heart healthy until the very old age. But the recent studies show that it may be good for your brain too! Researchers used MRIs to measure the brains of 400 healthy and dementia-free people at age 73 and again at 76. According to the results, those who followed a diet close to a Mediterranean, i.e. rich in vegetables, fruits, olive oil, beans, lean meat, fish, and whole grains, maintained their brain volume while those who followed other diets actually lost brain volume. The first group that stuck mostly to the Mediterranean diet saw an average 10-millimeter growth in brain volume.
What do hearing loss and iron have in common?
During one of the latest research on hearing loss, the researchers tested over 300 thousand people of both sexes. A small fraction of participants had either hearing loss or iron deficiency anemia. According to the study, hearing loss was more prevalent in women from the sample. It also discovered that the risk of hearing loss was almost two and a half times as high in those with anemia. The reason for the possible correlation is unknown. But animal studies suggest the iron deficiency in the body may decrease the blood flow to the inner ear.
