What is Valtrex and when is it used?
Valtrex by Cipla is a brand name of the medicine based on an antiviral substance called Valaciclovir designed to treat herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and herpes B. Under the influence of specific enzymes in the human body, after the intake the drug is rapidly and completely converted to acyclovir, another substance used to cure herpes.
What is the difference between acyclovir and Valtrex?
Though most people know acyclovir as the first-line medication for herpes virus, the drug is much less effective than Valtrex due to greatly lower bioavailability, i.e. the concentration of the active substance in the blood and plasma after the medication intake. The bioavailability of acyclovir is around 10-30% while Valtrex’s bioavailability is 55%. It means that you need to take much lower dosages of the last drug instead of bigger dosages of acyclovir. For example in recurring genital herpes an intake of 500 mg of Valtrex two times a day equals to a five-time intake of acyclovir 200 mg.
Whom the drug is contraindicated?
You should not buy Valtrex online if you have hypersensitivity to Valaciclovir, acyclovir or any auxiliary ingredients in the drug. It should be also used with caution in certain forms of HIV, thrombotic purpura, anemia, renal failure, and kidney impairment.
If you have any chronic conditions or take any medicines on a regular basis, consult your doctor before you buy the drug in order to be sure that it will do no harm to you.
How to use Valtrex?
The length of the treatment course and daily dosage depends on the type of herpes which requires treatment.
Herpes zoster or shingles is treated during 7 days. The daily dosage of 3000 mg is divided into three intakes.
Infections caused by herpes simplex, including genital herpes, are treated in adults with the intake of 500 mg of Valtrex two times a day. In the case of relapse, treatment should last from 3 to 5 days. In more severe cases and regular relapses, the duration of the treatment course can be increased to 10 days. An alternative manner of use is a one-day treatment with the intake of 2000 mg twice during the day with the interval of 12 hours.
For the prophylaxis of genital herpes, a dosage of 500 mg twice a day for three days is recommended. For severe cases when the relapses occur more than 10 times a year, the prophylaxis treatment includes the same dosage but divided into two intakes.
For people suffering from immunodeficiency, the dosage is 500 mg taken 2 times a day during 4-12 months.
For prophylaxis of the virus in sexual partners, the dosage of 500 mg once daily is recommended. The length of the treatment course is selected individually.
The dosage of Valtrex in children aged greater than or equal to 12 years in simple herpes is 2000 mg twice a day for 1 day taken 12 hours apart.
For the treatment of chickenpox, the daily dosage for children aged from 2 to 18 years is 20 mg per kilogram of body weight administered 3 times daily for 5 days. For small children, a suspension should be prepared.
Pregnant women should order Valtrex online only if their doctors think that the anticipated positive effect is greater than the possible negative effects to the fetus.
What adverse reactions can Valtrex cause?
The most frequent side effects that occur in the use are headache and nausea. Very rare are such side effects as dizziness, hallucinations, decreased mental abilities, and others. If you experience any severe side effects, you should immediately stop using the drug and seek medical assistance.
