Morepen Pharmaceuticals Generic drugs
Morepen Laboratories Ltd.
This company was established in 1984 as a producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients for other drug-making companies, i.e. produced the main components of the drugs that were marketed by somebody else. But now it is a full-cycle company with strong research and development department that works on the high-value molecules, novel delivery forms for the existing medications, and so on which allowed company to patent several medications.
Continuously developing and investing in the research, Morepen decided and was finally able to expand its markets to the western countries in 1999. But first it was necessary to receive the approval of the production facilities from the United States Food and Drugs Authority which was received the same year.
To satisfy the demand for the medications produced by the company, it felt the need to expand the production facilities. From the year 1996 to 2005 only, the value of the production facilities as assets grew from 97 million of U.S. Dollar to 188 million of U.S. Dollar.
The company went public, i.e. made its shares available through stock exchange in 1993.
As a part of its active pharmaceutical ingredient production and research, Morepen Laboratories began working on the new generation high-value molecules and precisely Ketrolac, Omeprazole, Cisapride and Loratadine with the last drug being among the company’s international exported products. Expecting the expiration of the patent of the U.S. company for Loratadine, an anti-allergy medication known worldwide as Claritin, in 2000, Morepen petitioned and secured U.S. FDA permission for the manufacture of Loratadine. In 1999, the drug-maker was granted U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval that made Morepen the youngest Indian company to get this approval.
The company’s production facilities are located in the scenic neighborhood of Baddi. The production complex consists of scientifically-integrated ultra-modern plants. Each of these ten plants has a specific product profile, i.e. is designated to the production of certain pharmaceutical form.
The company’s extensive research and development facilities and plants are operated by a committed team of professionals who guarantee the compliance of all stages of production to the highest quality standards.
The plants that are included in the Morepen production complex are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which makes it possible for the drug maker to export its products in the country. Currently, besides the U.S., the company exports its products to around 10 other countries of the world and aims to double this number by 2020.
Currently, Morepen produces and markets over a hundred branded formulations in eight major therapeutic segments in India, U.S., Canada, Russia, Europe, Israel, Turkey, Iran, and other non-regulated markets.
Loratadine, the medication for which the company has acquired the right to make and export to the U.S. after its developer’s patent expired, has 80% of the generics made by Morepen market share in the U.S. This medicine has been the main source of the revenue from the active pharmaceutical ingredients business. Another major contributor to the active pharmaceutical ingredients business is Sultamicillin Tosylate and Sultamicillin Base. Morepen is also engaged in the production of Fexofenadine, Atorvastatin, and Montelukast active pharmaceutical ingredients.
